Craniosacral Fascial Therapy (CFT)

Supporting Breastfeeding Through Gentle Bodywork

As a lactation consultant, you’re often the first to identify when something beyond technique may be interfering with a baby’s ability to feed well. You see the babies who are giving their all—but still struggling. Maybe it’s a shallow latch, tension in the jaw or neck, inconsistent suction, or a baby who just can’t seem to relax at the breast.

When feeding concerns persist despite excellent lactation support, Craniosacral Fascial Therapy (CFT) can be a powerful tool to help uncover and address the root cause.

What Is Craniosacral Fascial Therapy?

CFT is a gentle, hands-on manual therapy that works to release tension in the craniosacral system (the head and spine) and the fascial system (a connective tissue web that surrounds every muscle, bone, organ, and nerve in the body). It was developed by Dr. Barry Gillespie, who combined craniosacral therapy and myofascial release into one integrated approach.

This therapy uses light touch—often no more than 5 grams of pressure (about the weight of a nickel)—to help identify and release tightness, strain, or restrictions that may be interfering with a baby’s ability to feed, rest, and grow.

Why Body Tension Affects Breastfeeding

Even in an otherwise healthy baby, strain patterns from in-utero positioning, long or rapid labors, forceps/vacuum deliveries, or C-sections can create fascial restrictions. These can lead to:

  • Limited jaw or tongue mobility
  • Difficulty turning the head equally to both sides
  • Shallow or painful latch
  • Arching, fussing, or inability to stay latched
  • Clicking sounds or frequent breaks in suction
  • Exhaustion from inefficient feeding
  • Preference for feeding while sleepy

CFT gently works to unwind these strain patterns so the baby can move, feed, and settle more freely.

How Craniosacral Fascial Therapy Complements Lactation Support

Not a Replacement—A Collaborative Tool

Our CFT program is designed to work in partnership with lactation professionals, never in place of them. Your expertise in positioning, latch mechanics, and feeding education remains the cornerstone of infant feeding care. We simply support your work by helping to relieve physical restrictions that may be limiting a baby’s potential to feed well.

Areas Where CFT May Help

  • Oral tension: Releasing tension in the jaw, cheeks, and tongue to improve mobility
  • Neck asymmetry: Supporting neck rotation and comfort, helpful for babies with a side preference or mild torticollis
  • Nervous system regulation: Helping babies move from a state of fight-or-flight into calm, organized states that support feeding
  • Postural alignment: Enhancing whole-body coordination for better latch and suck-swallow-breathe rhythm
  • Post-birth strain: Gently resolving body compression or tightness from birth that affects feeding comfort

What to Expect When a Family is Referred

At PedsTeam, we work closely with referring providers to ensure seamless care. Here’s what you can expect when a family you refer comes to us:

  • A comprehensive intake to understand the baby’s history, birth experience, feeding patterns, and any lactation input
  • A series of gentle, hands-on sessions tailored to the baby’s comfort level and needs
  • A collaborative approach—we welcome ongoing communication with referring LCs (with family consent)
  • Parents are empowered with education and home strategies to support progress between sessions

Is Craniosacral Fascial Therapy Safe for Infants?

Yes. CFT is extremely gentle and well-tolerated by infants. Therapists use light touch and follow the baby’s cues closely, never forcing movement or manipulation. Sessions are conducted in a quiet, soothing environment and may even include feeding breaks or parent involvement to help the baby feel secure and supported.

When Should You Consider Collaboration with CFT?

CFT may be a helpful next step for babies who experience:

  • Persistent latching difficulty despite optimal positioning
  • Symptoms that suggest oral tension but haven’t responded to traditional support
  • Preparation for tongue/lip tie release to reduce tension and improve post-op outcomes
  • Post-tongue tie revision challenges with healing or integration
  • Head-turning preferences or mild plagiocephaly
  • Feeding discomfort paired with signs of body tension or distress

Even if you’re unsure what’s going on, CFT can provide gentle support to explore and resolve underlying tension patterns.

Why Choose PedsTeam for CFT?

Our team is formally trained in the Gillespie Approach to Craniosacral Fascial Therapy, a method developed specifically to address fascial strain patterns in infants and children. With years of pediatric experience, we deeply value the role of lactation consultants and work to complement your care—not duplicate it.

We’re committed to collaborative care, clear communication, and keeping the family’s feeding goals at the heart of every session. Our mission is simple: to help babies feel more at ease in their bodies so they can feed, grow, and thrive.
